Ask before you hire. Here are good questions, and what a good answer sounds like.

• Are you licensed and insured? A good answer is a clear yes, and they can share proof. Be careful if they dodge.
• Will I get a written quote? A good answer is yes, with parts and labor listed. Be careful of a price that only comes by phone.
• Can you explain the fix in plain words? A good answer is short and clear. Be careful of jargon with no definitions.
• Do you offer a repair and a replacement option? A good answer compares both. Be careful if they only push the most costly one.
• Is there a warranty on parts or work? A good answer says what is covered and for how long, in writing.

Red Flags

Walk away if a provider asks for full payment up front. Pause if they pressure you to decide on the spot. Doubt any quote that changes with no reason.
